Life, Luck, and Fertility

In Ancient Greek hippopotamus translates to "river horse" and since ancient times the hippo has been associated with life, fertility and motherhood. The Egyptian goddess of fertility, Tauret was represented by a pregnant hippopotamus and because the awesome beasts lived on the Nile, which Egyptians thought of as their source of life, the animal became endowed with the same spiritual meaning.

A venerated animal in some native American cultures, The Dragonfly has traditionally been seen as a magical and shamanistic insect. A symbols of water, fertility, and abundance, the dragonfly can supposedly warn people of danger and the Hopi people credit this winged wonder with saving their ancient ancestors from starvation by using supernatural powers to grow corn in four days.

The frog has been linked to life, fertility and birth. In China the frog has been a symbol of good luck since ancient times and Feng Shui practices recommend putting the image of a frog in an east facing window to encourage childbirth and a happy home. Also a good luck symbol in Japan, the frog is specifically associated with luck in travel on long voyages. Travelers carry a small frog amulet as protection and to insure a safe return home.
