Mara Hoffman

Mara Hoffman started her label in 2000 after graduating from Parsons School of Design in New York City. As the brand has evolved, they have committed themselves to implementing more sustainable and responsible practices. Through an open conversation with her shoppers about the company's approach, Mara Hoffman hopes to encourage consumers to reevaluate the relationship society has with clothing and to join her in taking action and holding her brand accountable.

When choosing materials Mara Hoffman prioritizes natural, recycled, and renewable components and does not use any fur, leather, or feathers. Their metal trims are made from partially recycled materials and their buttons are mostly made from the Corozo nut, a seed from the South American Tagua Palm that are harvested only when they ripen and fall from the trees. Mara Hoffman factories are required to work with high quality, non-hazardous dyes and they seek partnerships that are Oeko-Tex certified, meaning that raw materials will undergo testing to ensure that no harmful chemicals are used. Where trade regulations require that garments be packed in poly bags, the brand replaced conventional plastic bags with compostable bags. The company also makes it their mission to ensure that all people involved are treated fairly and respectfully along the way. As part of the basic requirements of doing business with Mara Hoffman, every factory that they partner with is required to adhere to internationally-accepted environmental and human rights standards for responsible production.
