Antique English 9k gold Mizpah heart locket on a 14k gold chain. Engraving the Hebrew word Mizpah on jewelry gained popularity during the Victorian era. The word is directly translated as "watchtower" but was used to convey an emotional bond between two people, either as lovers or friends. This type of sentimental jewelry experienced a revival during the first world war when men leaving for combat gave them to loved ones as amulets of love and protection during the period of separation.
