Chiltepin Alleviation Oil

Chiltepin is a tiny wild chile native to the canyons, desert foothills, and brushlands of the Sonoran and parts of the Chihuahuan Deserts in the American Southwest and Northern Mexico. For thousands of years, chile peppers have been valued throughout the Americas not only as food, but as part of traditional plant medicine.

Chiltepin Alleviation Oil

Known as the "Mother of all Peppers", chiltepins are the only wild chili native to the United States and are considered the ancient ancestor that gave life to nearly all of the domesticated pepper varieties, including jalapenos, serranos, and bell peppers.

Chiltepin Alleviation Oil
The heat of chiltepins comes from capsaicin, the naturally occurring compound that gives chile peppers their characteristic warmth. Applied topically, capsaicin has a long history of use in warming preparations for tired, aching muscles and joints.
Chiltepin Alleviation Oil
For our Alleviation Oil, whole wild-harvested Sonoran chiltepin chilis are slowly infused into golden jojoba oil, creating a subtly warming botanical rub intended to relax the muscles and for massage into tired, overworked areas of the body.
Chiltepin Alleviation Oil

Fresh meadowsweet leaf and flower are added to the infusion, another plant with a remarkable lineage in plant medicine. Meadowsweet has been used in European herbal traditions for centuries and contains naturally occurring salicylate compounds. In the nineteenth century, scientists studying compounds found in meadowsweet and other plants helped establish the chemistry that would eventually lead to acetylsalicylic acid, or aspirin. The name “aspirin” is connected to Spiraea Ulmaria, the botanical name once used for meadowsweet.
