Quintessence is a botanical perfume based on the ancient concept of the four elements. Each of the precious aromatics that compose Quintessence is aligned with one of the four elements – patchouli with earth, clary sage with water, jasmine with air, and sweet orange with fire. Quintessence is the aura of transformation and seasonal change, a deep and balancing mélange that molts winter and surges into dewy, ripe spring.

The concept of the four elements was first proposed by the Ancient Greeks and later built on by Aristotle who suggested a fifth cosmic element, unable to believe that the stars could be made up of anything terrestrial. The original four were the pure building blocks that made up all matter and were the fundamental components of every visible thing on earth.

As the theory expanded, even human temperament was categorized according to the four elements and Hippocrates theory of four “humors” linked personality traits and inner balance to four bodily fluids associated with earth, water, air, and fire. For thousands of years the element theory was the basis of philosophy, science, and medicine and played a role in various religions throughout the world.

At once herbaceous and musky, Quintessence feels fully alive. Its bright, green profile is blurred by an animalic, sensual florality that blooms when it meets the skin, like a bed of crushed herbs, warmed by sun and bodies on a languid afternoon.
