The Hair of Nine Mummies
The ancient Egyptians took particular pains to personalize and beautify their hairstyles, as the style of one’s hair could confer wealth, social status, and political standing. At that time people used unknown fats to tame and arrange their hair and these styling products seem to have been a key part of the mummification process, preserving the deceased person’s individuality and prestige into the afterlife.

The Backstory

The name “Hair of Nine Mummies” comes from a study in the UK that looked at the hair of eighteen mummies finding that nine of them had an unknown fat in their hair. They posited that the fat was a sort of ancient hair gel used in the embalming process. Their research contributed to the idea that hair was arranged during mummification to preserve the deceased person’s individuality and prestige into the afterlife.
