Description
A sacred perfume oil imbued with the spirit of dark, honeyed copal, an aromatic resin that is harvested sustainably on the property of our herbalist partner in Baja California Sur, Mexico. Copal gives the scent an incense-like heart, a treasure from the darkened altar of an ancient temple. And yet it is the flowers that animate the composition and breathe life into its caliginous aura – delicate peony, lavish Grand Duke jasmine, powdery tuberose, and the green velvet snap of gardenia unfurl in luminous contrast. For this micro-batch perfume, bushels of flowers are painstakingly handmade into a few ounces of precious oil through enfleurage, an ancient method of perfumery that can take months because the concentrated flower oils are achieved slowly, without any heat or chemical solvents.

The ancient Mayans and Aztecs offered prayers to the gods through plumes of copal smoke, an effort to influence and interact with their deities with its ethereal scent. In Mexico, the scent of copal was thought to lure the dearly departed from the grave to the family altar and for many years the aromatic resin has been an integral part of Day of the Dead celebrations.
