Kaj Franck

littala is a glass factory in Iittala, Finland. In the 1950's they produced the glass wares of Kaj Franck who, with Alvar Aalto and Aino Aalto, revolutionized glass design, making it an important part of the golden era of Finnish design during the following decades. Franck had an extreme yet rational design philosophy based on three familiar basic shapes: a circle, a square, and a rectangle. He believed objects should be multifunctional and combinable and removed everything excessive from his designs, leaving only the essentials. One of the first advocates of recycling, Franck has often been called the "conscience of Finnish design" as he shunned materialism and believed in removing all excess. The signatures of his lines were simple forms and strong colors. Kaj Franck won many awards in his distinguished career and became internationally famous. Today, the Kaj Franck Award is Finland's most prestigious design recognition. His best-known works are Iittala Teema and the 1958 Kartio series, which remain successful products today.
