Bats have existed since the prehistoric era, make up almost a fourth of all mammal species on earth, and are found in every part of the world with the exception of Antarctica and most of the Arctic. Because of their prevalence around the globe, almost every country and culture has their own symbolism and stories that they’ve attached to the small winged mammals.
Creatures of the night, guardians, guides, tricksters, deceivers, supernatural bloodsuckers – the bat represents many things, but is almost always associated with darkness and the unknown. The Navajo look to the bat as a guardian and believe that they will visit a person seeking answers and whisper messages from the spirit world into their ear.
Extremely sensitive to sound, the bat has also come to represent humans desire to become attuned to that which we cannot see, a portal to what exists beyond the physical world.
