Shino Takeda

New York based ceramicist Shino Takeda grew up on the Japanese Island of Kyushu, an island with a rich history in ceramics and art. Growing up her mother was an avid collector of ceramics, textiles and crafts and the island being so close to China and Korea the pottery styles of the three countries influenced one another, mainly through the bright, vibrant colors. At twenty, Shino came to NY to pursue ballet and it wasn't until years later that she began studying the treasured pieces that she brought with her from Japan and experimenting with a style of her own.

Today each Takeda piece is made with red clay with grog, speckled pink clay, or black clay and is hand built using the coil method, a traditional process of shaping clay that has been used for many thousands of years. Hand painted with vibrant, lively colors and glazed in the studio by wood firing or in an electric kiln, each piece is a unique work of art, unlike any other.
