Handmade wild clay dish designed for burning incense or sweetgrass.
Sister ceramics are handmade ceramic forms by Jenny Mulder of Taos, New Mexico. Each item is made in small batches and straddles a delicate line between functionality and art.
Their wild clay is dug next the Rio Grande Canyon in Taos. The clay is red hued because of the iron present but varies in texture and inclusions. Often small glistening specks of natural mica can be found in the wild clay and each piece of pottery made using it is different and special. Micaceous pottery has been used for millennia in the kitchens of the Pueblo in Taos, as it is food safe and a good conductor of heat. Collecting and processing the clay is labor intensive and the clay itself is harder to work with than factory made clay, but the results have an organic, unique feel and Sister is proud to use local New Mexican materials.
