One of the most precious and extravagant oils on earth, neroli is extracted from the blossoms of the bitter orange tree and has been used since ancient times to relieve “nervousness” and as an aid to spiritual healing.
With this handmade, small batch perfume soft, ambrosial white neroli blossoms are illuminated by the radiant shimmer of oranges and tangerines from the souk. As the scent warms and molts with body heat, a deeper complexity emerges in the heart of The Priestess. Ancient frankincense, spicy sweet clove, and a quietly earthy sandalwood create an aromatherapy to calm the soul.
Neroli
The name “neroli” harkens back to the late 17th century when the Italian royal Anne Marie Orsini, Duchess of Bracciano and Princess of Nerola, fell in love with the ambrosial air that wafted off of her local orange groves in the spring. So enamored with the scent, she had the blossoms from the bitter orange trees distilled into oil and used the extracted concentration to perfume her gloves and scent her bath water, creating a craze for the honeyed perfume at her court.
The scent of neroli is floral and airy, with top notes of honeyed orange, and spicy, green undertones. Originally from the Middle East, neroli is one of the most precious and extravagant oils on earth. It has been used since ancient times to relieve “nervousness” and as an aid to spiritual healing, and aromatherapists still use the scent to relieve tension and calm the mind and body.
A natural aphrodisiac, neroli owes part of its allure to indole, a heady, musky aromatic compound released as the white blossoms are broken down, a scent long associated with skin, sex, and desire. The ancient perfumers used to caution that virgin maidens should never be allowed to pick in fields of white flowers because they feared the perfumed blossoms would drive them to indecency.
