Clara the World Traveler
This piece is named in honor of Clara, a female Indian rhinoceros who toured Europe for 17 years during the mid-18th Century. Clara was adopted by Jay Albert Sichterman and became a household pet after her mother was killed by hunters in 1738. Clara later came to Douwemunt Van der Meer, a Dutch sea captain, who transported her safely to Rotterdam. From there, Clara toured Europe for 17 years, making stops in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Poland, France, Italy, Denmark, and England. In an age before railways and modern roads, the three-ton Clara had to travel in an enormous coach drawn by eight horses. She became a favorite of European royalty, including Frederick the Great and Louis XV. Clara also posed for scientific portraits and etchings. She was seen as an object of marvel and a challenge to fundamental philosophical and theological beliefs of the time.
