The Storied History of Rose Oil and Its Many Uses in Beauty

– A Flower Fit for a Queen –

Cleopatra is thought to have bathed her face and body in rosewater to keep her skin dewy and supple and used the aphrodisiac qualities of a rose perfumed mist to entice lovers. Such a reputed lover of the scent of the fresh, wild flower was Cleopatra that in Shakespeare’s play Antony and Cleopatra, she orders her sails to be drenched in pure rosewater and as the ships make their way into Rome the sails are said to be “so perfumed that the winds were lovesick with them.” Antony is supposed to have had to make his way onboard through a layer of rose petals a foot and a half high to reach the opulent pharaoh. The allegedly tempting Egyptian queen didn't know it but rose contains phenylethylamine, the same chemical produced by the brain when you're falling in love, and that can help to reduce stress and anxiety, calming negative emotions that can get in the way of arousal.

history of rose in beauty

The delicate petaled rose has been used for thousands of years to heal and scent the skin. The Ancient Egyptians were known to boil whole roses to create balms that would protect their skin from the harsh and dry desert conditions. Aristocratic Roman women created rose petal poultices, believing the rose to be a powerful tool to combat aging. The Persians invented steam distillation to extract the precious oil for skin and medieval women treated their scars and scented their bodies with the luxurious rose water and oil. Rose oil is antiseptic, astringent, anti-inflammatory and cell rejuvenating. Rose is also an intoxicating and aromatherapeutic perfume that has been shown to act as an antidepressant and to relieve nervous tension.

– Our Rose Oil –

Our precious, organic rose otto oil and rose absolute come from The Valley of Roses in Bulgaria. The cultivation of roses in Bulgaria dates back to the 16th century, when the first rose plantations sprang up in the town of Kazanlak because of its favorable climate and soil conditions. As the region grew and new plantations opened, the area became known as The Valley of Roses and for hundreds of years the fertile and temperate valley has produced the highest quality roses in the world.

Our Rose Oil, a concentrated all natural perfume and rejuvenating facial oil, is handmade and bottled in small batches, and is a fusion of the precious Bulgarian rose otto and rose absolute. The floral profile is more complex because of the different methods by which the essence of the flower is extracted, creating a scent that is at once fresh and lively, deep and sensuous.
